Here’s what last year’s participants had to say:
Perspective of the opportunity:
“I was able to attend this event because a professor suggested it to me. For me, it was face-to-face feedback from active professionals in the advertising industry. This was so valuable because I wasn’t sure where my portfolio was going, regarding a specific focus. The tickets were also free, so it didn’t burn a hole through my college student funds.”
“My biggest take away was the guidance everyone gave me as far as what to do with my portfolio. I had a much clearer idea of what direction I wanted it to head to and how to organize it. The review was also an opportunity to build connections with these professionals so when you start in this industry, you won’t be completely alone. I remained in contact with Laura Gaines well after the review and she became my mentor who gave me solid advice and was there to talk to.”
Advice when putting a portfolio together:
“My advice for anyone with a portfolio in art is to organize it. When you have an interview for a job that specializes in graphic design, for example, you don’t want to show them a portfolio that includes graphic design, animation, and interior design. It’s totally fine if you want to do all three! You just don’t want to overwhelm your potential employer because their time is limited when interviewing. Even if your portfolio matches the job you’re going for, narrow the amount of work you show down to your absolute best. Also, consider making an online portfolio. That way, anyone can visit it anytime if they want to see more of your work. Best of luck to all of you!”
